AELP launch functional skills ‘mini commission’

Next week AELP will launch the first in a series of mini commissions designed to test and explore a new way of working with its members to deliver a collective voice to help tackle the big issues currently facing the skills sector.

By working closely with AELP members and Local Provider Networks, AELP will use the mini commission approach to provide the skills sector with new opportunities to make positive policy changes with government by:

  • Providing more data to show the impact of high-level policy/decisions;
  • Providing evidence of the unintended and damaging consequences of existing policy/decisions;
  • Proving how outcomes could be better with changed thinking and action;
  • Shifting the dial on future policy decisions.

The first mini commission will focus on Functional Skills and will “assess the impact and damaging unintended consequences of current Functional Skills policy within apprenticeships, and the argument for a change of approach”. This kicks off with two information sessions taking place Thursday 11 July 10am-11am; and Friday 12 July 10am-11am. AELP members can register their interest for either session here.

Further information about the mini commissions, and/or how to get involved is available by emailing AELP’s Cheryl Swales at [email protected] or visiting our dedicated AELP mini commissions webpage.

Ben Rowland, AELP Chief Executive, said:

“I am excited that AELP is launching the new Mini Commissions very shortly. These will test and explore a new way of working with our members, utilising our close links with Local Provider Networks, to ensure a collective voice on some of the big issues currently facing the skills sector. I hope this will provide us, and you, with new opportunities and will help to build more creative and constructive relationships with officials. As a result, I’d urge all AELP members with an interest in delivering functional skills to get involved in our first mini commission of the year by registering for one of our information sessions.”

The Association of Employment and Learning Providers (AELP) is a national membership body, proudly representing organisations operating in the skills sector. AELP members deliver a range of training and vocational learning – including the majority of apprenticeships as well as Skills Bootcamps, 16-19 Study Programme, Adult Education Budget and more.
